Alcohol triggers migraine, at least for me. However, I attempted to coexist with migraine and drinking alcohol for about four years before I got sober. I was down to about two specific types of adult beverage — one of them being top shelf gin — that I thought I could drink without getting sick, but the amount of effort and money I was expending to drink booze and still enjoy myself wasn’t worth it in the end. I have been sober since August 2018 (almost exactly four years at the time this painting goes live!).

It turns out my medications work better when I don’t drink. And that the correct amount of fermented anything for me? None. Not even vinegar.

"Top Shelf Gin" 4×6 inch mixed media on canvas.

This series is as much about the issues of drug prices as it is about my life with migraine disease. My maintenance medication has a sticker price of $1200 per month. Why do they cost so much? I assume they are made of gold… so I crafted these little golden pills. So each of 30 completed works of art costs as much as one day of my migraine meds: $40
