Stacking Stones 1
These stacking stone studies are part of a larger body of work titled “How Do You Hold a Memory,” painted during the spring and summer of 2022.
I live with neurological disease, and I care for a parent with dementia. As humans, we build routines, skills, and habits through repetition; it is these same patterns that degrade as dementia progresses. As I ruminated on the convergence of memory and identity, my attention turned toward the tradition of cairns, standing stones, and other intentional rock formations. Memory is both fleeting and resilient; what will be remembered when only the stones remain? To highlight this contradiction of my weird human experience, I painted steadfast stones with ethereal watercolors, representing solid minerals with transparent pools of pigment.

This piece is painted with artisan grade, handmade watercolors on vintage book pages, and are finished with acrylic accents (marker, gesso, metallic marker)
Stacking Stones #1-5 are 4x6 inches. Each piece is matted and will fit in a standard 8x10 frame. There is only one of each study available.
